Editorial Reviews:

The BFG GeForce GTX 260 graphics card rips through DirectX 10 games at blazing fast frame rates and enables realistic physical motion and massively destructible environments with NVIDIA's PhysX technology. And that's not all - the BFG GeForce GTX 260 graphics card also supports extreme HD resolutions, and gives your system the power of up to 192 multi-threaded processor cores, offloading the most intensive processing tasks from your CPU to your Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).

Summary: zippy...
Comment: Core 2 Duo 3.0, Vista 32bit, 4gb DDR2 ram, and this thing cooks. Stalker Clear sky at almost completely highest settings for everything and we are still getting above 30fps.. Crysis at almost completely full settings and we once again are above 30.. Great cost/performance ratio on this card.. Get it..

Summary: Average new release from nvidia
Comment: I expected to see somewhat of a significant improvement going from an 8800GT KO to a GTX 260. Saw it in stores yesterday (Tuesday) so I thought I would get it and try it out. I got the OC version from BFG since it was the only card I could find anywhere to buy. I dont think these go on sale officially until tomorrow.

Anyway, drove home and immediately ran 3DMark06 with the 8800GT once more. My rig is now a couple years old, so its not the latest and greatest. I'm running an E6600, stock settings, with 4gb of DDR2-800 memory, and an 8800GT. With this setup, my score was only 10055. After uninstalling the drivers and putting in the new GTX 260 and using the drivers from the website I ran 3DMark again. 10333. Wow. I gained almost 300 points. Whoopee. ::cough:: sarcasm ::cough cough:: /endofsarcasm

Saddened by this, I wondered how game performance would differ. I then ran Age of Conan, and noticed almost no difference at all. The problem with AOC, is that the time of day seems to greatly affect the performance of the game. It was hard to justify whether or not this card did better then my 8800GT. In some areas, and at certain times of the day, I would average 52 fps, and see spikes up to low 70s. In others, I would see the dip down to 24fps. It just isnt consistent. Niether is my 8800GT in this game, however.

I then tried out Crysis. I was able to run it silky smooth as butter at 1920x1200 with VSYNC enabled and everything set to HIGH settings... no AA. I tried VERY HIGH and got about 20-25 fps. Playable... barely, so I turned it back down to all HIGH. Runs great this way but I was sure my 8800GT could do these almost as well.

In the end I think that this card may just be suffering from premature drivers, or it could need a much more powerful processor to take advantage of it. I know I am running a mid-range processor now. Either way, I did not expect to see nearly the same performance as an 8800GT for $270 more then an 8800GT. This card, being an OC version, was $450 in store. May be less online later this week, we will see. The great news is that where I buy these cards out (purely for testing purposes) is a place where I can return the card, no questions asked.

I will likely be returning this card this weekend, but I will play around more with it this week and see if I can find anything stunning that will make me change my mind about it.

The best thing about the design of the card is that it seems to be extremely quiet and relatively cool. I absolute abhor anything noisy in my computer. I purchased everything in my computer based off of noise level. I got the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro cpu cooler for noiseless operation, and I purchased a case for noise reduction, as well as replaced the default fan on the 8800GT with the Accelero S1 rv2 to make it fanless and quiet. No complaints with the cooling solution for the GTX 260. Good design here, at least from BFG.

***CAUTION*** I own the Antec P182 Gun Metal case, and I had to take out the middle hard drive rack (thank god it was removable) in order to fit this massive GTX 260 in place. I have never seen a larger card before. It has got to have a good 2 inches on the 8800GT easily. If you do not have a very large case or one with a removable hard drive racks, be aware of the space issue that may arise with the new GTX 260/280 cards.

Lastly, if you have any questions or would like me to try out certain tests, just post inquiries here and I will see if I can test and post results for you all. I am going to try benchmarks using FRAPS of Crysis, COD4, and Bioshock tonight. I own most well-known games so I'm up for trying anything.
