Summary: Very Good Cam!
Comment: If you have never bought a security cam before read PART 1 if you have skip to PART 2.
PART 1:
If you've never brought a security cam before you are in for a real treat! First I'll assume the camera is not going to be sitting on top of your computer since this would be a very expensive web cam to chat with. This being the case you will need a router, which will connect to your DSL or Cable modem. You'll need this device so the camera will be able to broadcast its signal out. So again, connect your modem to the router then the camera to any free port on the router. If you will be using your camera wirelessly you must buy a wireless router.
PART 2:
Ok, for those of you who understood part 1 here is my personal and professional review. First my credentials: Sonicwall CSSA, MCP, Network+ and, A+ certified. The WLPTS not to be confused with the WLPTZ model is a great little camera. To be clear the Z model has a few more features and has a lower LUZ which you want in a camera. Now the WLPTS is simply fantastic in terms of audio (32-bit) not 16-bit setting and the video is also outstanding during the day. However, the video is subject in the dark. Meaning in the day light this camera simply rocks! At night this is when there is a twist. You will notice the picture is grainy or a slight distorted picture. Don't get me wrong you can still see but much more difficult. If very dark you have two choices. Place in some night lights or install lights on a timer. Your other option is check out the Z model. The Z model has a LUZ of .5 compared to 1.5 for the S. 1.5 means 1.5 candles lit. So if you have a room in total darkness and lit 1.5 candles the camera should pick up the picture. The Z model will pick up video in .5 candles lit (in theory).
To sum up...if the camera will be used when the light is decent get it in a heartbeat. If going to be used in someplace fairly dark I personally would pay more for the Z model if you can afford the price tag.
As for setup, this is actually pretty easy. Plug the camera into the router install the software and simply run it. It should pick up the camera very quickly. Configuring can be a little tricky if you have never configured a camera or a router before but if you have this is really very easy. 4XEM has very good support although tricky to get a hold of if you are calling late in the day. Easy if calling earlier in the day. They are also very helpful.
