Do you know where you're going? An ancient axiom says, "If anything is certain, nothing is certain". The world, its roads, pathways and everything between are open to change. Freshmaps is a service for owners of select Navigon GPS devices that provides up to 12 updates of maps and points-of-interest over the course of three years. Using Freshmaps means you're map software will always be the most recent and up-to-date. Comment: Received unit a week or so ago. Charged up unit for one hour before powering it on. Unit crashed and needed a reboot twice during the first hour of use. However it is working fine for the past five days, no problems. Looks like it comes with a newer firmware than what is avail on Navigon web site (version 1.3X). The map is fairly accurate; however I have found some errors. The errors seem to be Navteq's mapping errors. There is an error reporting site for Navteq (see Navigon's web site). I urge everyone who has a GPS to file an error report when they see mapping errors. It is fairly simple to do. This GPS is ok for me; I agree with the previous reviewers that the small letters are sometimes hard to read. I also use the unit in a pickup truck and the glare from the back window makes it even harder to read the display. However I am satisfied with the unit and would recommend it to anyone who is at least a little bit technically inclined. It provides more info on and off screen than most other units. Speaker volume is adequate, even in a no-frills pickup truck.

Comment: The Navigon Freshmaps Update Service will work if one has a lot of patience and perseverence. The service performs in the typical Navigon fashion: extremely dumb and non-cooperative software performance. The update process is non-intuitive and downright obstinate at times. When one does get to the point of downloading the update file it takes several hours to complete (using DSL). All that being said the product did accomplish an update. Quarterly updates for three years is an excellent idea making the product a good value. This is especially true for the purchase price and delivery of the item that was obtained using Amazon.com.

Comment: follow the instructions is that simple. just make sure you have the usb cable that connects from your pc to the navigon gps. and also navigon came up with a desktop software, so you don't have to go to the website anytime there is an update.
