Combining essential cellular functionality with fun extras such as a VGA camera, the LG VX5400 for Verizon Wireless is a slimmer update to the popular LG VX3450 thanks to the elimination of the stubby antenna. It boasts a one-touch speakerphone, speaker-independent voice command, and Bluetooth connectivity for communication headsets. Other features include large-sized keys on the numeric keypad, dual displays, access to Verizon's VZ Navigator GPS service (with turn-by-turn directions), and downloadable games, ringtones, and wallpapers from Verizon's Get It Now over-air service. It operates on Verizon's 850/1900 CDMA and 850 AMPS frequencies.
It's all in the details: large, easy-to-press keys and a VGA camera. |
The nicely compact VX5400 features dual screens, Bluetooth connectivity, and access to Verizon's Get It Now services for downloadable games and ringtones. | Verizon Service Options This phone is compatible with Verizon's Get It Now wireless pay-per-download service, which features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Get It Now service. Getting on the Internet is easy using Verizon's Mobile Web 2.0 package, which allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Verizon's Get It Now wireless download service is also fully compatible with this phone. This pay-per-download service features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Get It Now service. With this GPS-enabled phone, you'll be able to access Verizon's VZ Navigator service (additional charges applicable) for voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions, heads-up alerts, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US (such as landmarks, restaurants and ATMs), and detailed color maps. And Verizon's Chaperone service lets you easily locate your loved ones from your Verizon Wireless phone or PC in real time. After defining a zone, such as an area designating a school or summer camp, you'll be sent an alert via text message when the Chaperone handset enters or leaves the zone. Phone Features The VX5400 features a traditional clamshell design with a 1.8-inch, 160 x 128-pixel internal color TFT LCD screen with support for 262K, as well as an external STN LCD with a 1-inch, 96 x 64-pixel resolution (for displaying incoming call information, battery life, signal strength, graphics, photos and more). The address book can store up to 1000 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses; each contact entry provides room for up to five numbers, two email addresses, and picture ID. Meanwhile, a speed dialing feature allows you to dial your 95 most accessed numbers virtually instantaneously. The phone comes with 18 built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More ringtones can be downloaded via Verizon's Get It Now service. This phone provides Bluetooth version 1.1 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and object push for vCard and vCalendar. You can save up to 20 Bluetooth profiles. Customer Rating: Summary: Not pleased with phone, or Verizon's response! Comment: I was eligible for an upgrade and decided to go with this one after comparing it with several others online. Really thought I had made a good decision, but when I got it, I just couldn't seem to adjust to it. The Biggest problem by far for me was that awful little piece of plastic at the bottom of the phone that you have to remove in order to plug your charger in to the phone. Extremely hard to keep track of as it is sooo tiny!! And I'm thinking without it, all kind of lint and dust can get into that hole and render the phone useless. However, I persevered and tried to adjust from my previous phone (samsung sch a930) to this thing. Each time I had to charge my phone I had a very difficult time because of the bad arthritis in both my hands. I also found that the alarm is a bit of a pain. Instead of being able to set your alarm all on one screen, you have to click "set" go to another page to enter your alarm time, click "ok" and THEN hit save. It's not user friendly like my a930 was which let you do everything on one screen under the alarm (this is important to me since I use the alarm all the time). I found the voice command to be very poor and it couldn't recognize half the commands I told it, sending me elsewhere instead.
But, what I really didn't like was that when I called Verizon and told them that I am having trouble with the phone, most especially the charger part because of the arthritis, and asked them if I could please return it for another phone, they told me no because I had passed my thirty day trial. I tried everything and I mean everything! I quoted to the rep all the promises and guarantees that I heard while waiting on hold for almost an hour "your problem becomes our problem" "your issue will be resolved in the 1st phone call". I begged him, I pleaded, I threatened to terminate early and take my friends with me that I had recommended. I was trying to emphasize how very important it is for me to have a phone because of my medical problems and they said no. If I wanted to get another phone I have to pay full retail price.
Now I hate the phone even more and I am now stuck with it for two years because of their new every two deal.
Please pay attention: if you have arthritis in your hands and have trouble navigating small items, this phone is not for you. You will constantly have to get someone to help you take out the little plastic piece, plug in the charger to the phone, and finally unplug it. I hate it. And I'm mad at verizon for not treating me like an important customer.
Customer Rating: Summary: As Good As It Gets for Verizon with Many Reservations Comment: I've been trying to renew my verizon contract for over a year to get new equipment with no luck til I found this phone. One BIG drawback is verizon's NEW policy for the "New every two" is to DROP the discount from $100 to $50 if you have a lower priced plan with the stipulation that it must be used within 6 months or forfeited. A Verizon issue, not a phone issue, but one that will cost them my business in the end. So much for customer care!!
The phone itself is much better than the 3 I tried before this: The Samsung u340, u410, and Verizon Coupe--all of which had LOUSY battery lives, poor reception, and a gross lack of features as compared with my old workhorse, the Samsung sch a630--which I would get again in a heartbeat IF IT WERE AVAILALBE!! Great phone!
Pros:
1. Battery life very good compared with what I have used before. I hate to have to charge a phone daily--this one can go 3-4 days normal use (for me) before it needs a charge.
2. Speakerphone is excellent.
3. If you have the bucks for VZ Navigator--it works better than many standalone GPS systems I've seen (ie, Garmin, TomTom, etc), plus weather and traffic alerts with VOICE DELIVERY on directions so you don't get distracted while driving!
4. Easy to find "In Case of Emergency" contacts.
5. Internal antennae is great, making the phone easy to carry in pocket or purse.
Cons:
1. Vibrate mode is very weak. Also, my old Samsung would had a nice "Vib Plus Ring"--phone would vibrate 3 times THEN ring on an incoming call. GREAT if you are in meetings. This one will vibrate AND ring AT THE SAME TIME. The Vibrate only lasts 3 rings and is very weak (if you had the phone in a coat pocket you would never feel it). Ring and vibrate simultaneously defeats the purpose--so I don't use the vibrate mode.
2. No call disconnect alert (Samsung a630 had this) means you can get a lot of dropped calls and not know it.
3. Even though this phone stores up to 1000 contacts, the "groups" are very limited in their storage. So if you have more in the "Friends" group than entries available, you must create a new group "Friends2"...
4. The "My Sounds" included for text/Pic messaging would make great ringtones, unfortunately you cannot transfer them over to the Ringtones. I guess Verizon really wants you to use the "Get It Now" to download, but they have nothing I would want to hear on my phone. The Ringtones included are awful and limited.
5. The wallpapers are equally awful as the ringtones, and again, you must use the "Get It Now" to download. Contrast that with my old Samsung which allowed a "Calendar" wallpaper--great option--unavailable on the LG. To get a nice or neutral wallpaper you must spend $$$. Not an option for me.
6. Camera is useless and takes ridiculously blurry pictures. Ergo, it is useless to take a picture to use as a wallpaper...
7. Front screen does not continuously display the time and only lights when an incoming call is received (or missed) BRIEFLY. Which begs the question as to WHY is it there?? Again, useless in real life. Interior screen has an option for "continuous on," why not the front screen??
8. No missed call alert. A very big drawback!
9. My old Samsung would pick up calls where no one else could...this phone drops them just as easily. Receives them and then drops them. With no disconnect alert, you are left talking to the air...
I just want a simple, no nonsense, easy to use phone with quick access to emergency numbers, good battery life, and common sense alerts that are user customizable with good selection of ringtones and wallpapers. Verizon consistently does not provide this (except by download $$$) and their new equipment just doesn't stack up quality-wise to what they used to offer. This from a VerizonWireless customer of over 6 years. This may be my last year. My only option is to troll ebay for old samsung sch a630 phones or get cheated by verizon (see the phone credit drop from $100 to $50 with a time limit). However, in terms of what I have tried so far in new equipment from Verizon, this is the best option they have for what I need. Definitely NOT satisfied and waiting for a better offer for my business...
Customer Rating: Summary: LG VX5400 - Best phone for calls Comment: If you are a person into playing songs, memory cards, etc. etc., read no further.
If you just want to make calls, hear the ring, see the screen, hear the other party, have them hear you, have a signal if at all possible and a long battery life, this is the phone for you. The camera is quite nice, but if I want photos I use my camera.
The LG VX5400 is a tri-mode phone. What this means is that it not only receives digital signals, but also receives analog signals. There are fewer and fewer analog towers, but they persist in many beach areas and in remote locations. Just last year we were at a beach location and I was the only one to have a signal with my old tri-mode phone the entire week. Even with all their disabling tricks that my children hate so much, I use Verizon because they have better coverage - by far.
Since I am primarily interested in using my phone as a phone (including connecting to my computer) I will review each phone use separately.
The phone:
No protruding antenna so it slips in and out of pocket or purse very nicely.
I am 71 years old. My hearing is not quite what it used to be. My eyes are fine but my wife's are not quite what they used to be either. To make a long story short, if you can hear, you will hear this phone ring and hear the person talking to you, even if a trailer truck is going by. If you can see, you will be able to read the numbers on the screen.
Reception - Since I have used many phones (as phones) I can safely say this has the best transmission - reception of any phone I have ever used and probably the best reception of any phone on the market. Before writing this review I tested on my two "guaranteed disconnect" locations last night. No disconnect, only a brief pause in reception, very brief. I was made aware of this since we have a grocery store in our remote mountain location where reception in the back is just not possible - at least until now. No problem. I could have been outside in the parking lot.
Talk time - long, very long.
Features:
Yes, this phone will do about everything you might want even if you do texting, music, up and down loads etc. Look up the list on Verizon wireless. As usual, Verizon has pretty well figured out how to charge you for them. The most important feature for me is connecting and this phone is the best I've ever had.
Voice commands:
This phone will recognize a long (very long) list of voice commands, something I use all the time. You need to speak a little slowly for the phone to recognize what you want. For example, to make a call:
CALL ROLAND MOBILE, or
CALL MARY WORK
I primarily use the voice commands for calling. It does seem to learn your voice with the passage of time and gets better. It can be a bit frustrating at first. My wife has the same phone now and was a bit frustrated since it pronounces every name correctly except mine, constantly calling BOB ROM or RON. She may have done something initially to cause this or it may be a flaw. However it does get the right number all the time.
Emergency calling:
One of my entries is the name "emergency". When you say CALL EMERGENCY it calls 911 AND turns on your GPS location. I tried it out to make sure it worked, but hung up quickly after part of the first ring. Too late. My GPS location was on and 911 immediately called me back. I did apologize and explain and the lady was very nice and understanding. But, know that it works.
Menus:
The menus are mostly intuitive and easy to use. The appropriate prompts seem to appear at the right time.
Customer Rating: Summary: I Like This Phone Comment: For a person like me who just wants a straightforward unit to make and recieve voice calls without all the tricky controls and flashy graphics, this is perfect. The casework is durable, resists fingerprints and is sleek. In person it looks better than the image shown because the clear screen cover of the flip is mirror-like which matches the case color and finish, very nice!, and it feels natural in the hand. Nothing but happiness here. Also, Verizon has superior coverage compared to ATT (my former provider) by far, and they seem way more service oriented with bigger stores that are well staffed. Priceless.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great basic phone, but why no missed call alert? Comment: Overall the 5400 is solid and simple to use. Does all a phone should (and not a bunch of fancy nonsense).
My only complaint is: there is no audible alert option for a missed call! There's a voicemail alert, but w/ the phone closed, there is no sound and no visible indication of a missed call (unless you push some button to illuminate the external display).
I dunno if that's an LG mistake or Verizon has locked out the feature, but sure wish I could add this alert back in.
