Andréa Burns spent much of 2007 wowing audiences with her Drama Desk-winning performance as Daniela, the saucy hair salon owner, in the runaway off-Broadway hit "In the Heights." Hailed as one of the great interpreters of American Musical Theatre, she has had the distinction of originating songs by Jason Robert Brown, John Bucchino, and Stephen Sondheim. Her debut album, A DEEPER SHADE OF RED, winningly blends two worlds -- the Broadway sound she inhabits and the female singer-songwriter sounds of her childhood -- bringing a fresh take to pop hits and theatre standards. The results capture the full range of Andréa's versatility, warmth, humor and power.

Customer Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Treat! Comment: Andrea Burns debut album is simply wonderful. She is able to not only sing every song with warmth and honesty, but she acts them as well. And that is not something you find with many singers today. Two stand outs for me are "The Wish" and "BTW Write Back". The former is a simple love song about requited love, something that everyone can relate to. She sings it with and aching sadness, that I almost tear up every time I listen to it. The latter is completely opposite. It is a hilarious comic song that shows what amazing acting chops she has. These are simply 2 highlights in an all around enjoyable album. There isn't a single song that doesn't evoke an emotion, which is exactly what music should do.
Customer Rating: Summary: Brava Andrea Comment: Andrea hit s home run with this beautifully produced collection of showtunes and rock songs. This is simply a must-buy for all cabaret and showtune fans.
Customer Rating: Summary: ENDLESSLY WONDERFUL Comment: With A Deeper Shade of Red Andrea Burns has recorded a CD for the ages. She wraps her warm and crazily versatile voice around a fascinating collection of songs. It's not often that Stephen Sondheim and Melissa Manchester share disc space, but in Andrea Burns' expert handling, it makes delicious sense. Her take on Sondheim's "What More Do I Need? (from Saturday Night) may be the definitive recording of this song; filled with simple joy, love and a strong dose of wonder, the song soars. Manchester's "Through the Eyes of Grace" was new to me and it is a heartbreaking treasure. Burns' supple voice commands you to pay attention and you surrender, happily.
"A Little Brains, A Little Talent" from Damn Yankees is dripping with sixties sass. A fantastic piece of special material written by In the Heights composer Lin-Manuel Miranda is a completely hilarious take on the obsessive online fan. The song is a gem and the performance impeccable. Burns manages to take well-known songs like "I Have a Love" (from West Side Story) and Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Morning" and turn them into pure, uncomplicated declarations - you listen as if you`ve never heard these song before.
Like all great singers, Andrea Burns chooses wonderful material and trusts that writers have done their job. She lets the song breathe and finds the truth. I'm sure this is why this CD is such a pleasure to hear. It's clear from the first track that you are in the hands of a consummate professional. Andrea Burns is an artist you need to experience. Treat yourself.
Customer Rating: Summary: At long last... Comment: Andrea Burns can be heard on a number of CD's--she even has a hit dance single!!--but finally, at long last, she has her own album, and it's a beauty. Her voice has never sounded better. For years, she's been playing a ridiculous variety of roles--from European and national tours (Maria in "West Side Story" and Lucille Frank in "Parade") to regional productions (Dot in "Sunday in the Park with George" and Evita in..."Evita"); from off-Broadway (songs for a "New World" and "Saturday Night") to Broadway (Vicki Nichols in "The Full Monty" and Belle in "Beauty and the Beast").
If she simply sang songs on this CD from all of these musicals, her range would be astonishing, but many of these tracks come out of another tradition entirely--the female pop songs of her childhood (Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Melissa Manchester)!! She makes of all of these her own, but the selection showcases what so many theater audiences have loved about her for years--her versatility. That versatility is best heard in a brand-new song, "BTW, Write Back," written by the writer (and star) of "In the Heights," Lin-Manuel Miranda, who clearly spent enough time with Andrea to know what she could do. It's a show stopper...and so is she.
Customer Rating: Summary: A must buy Comment: Andrea Burns's new CD delivers everything. If you love, Love Songs, If you love Theatre, if you love laughter, then this is the one for your collection. On top of it all, the cover is absolutely faboulous! I hope they have a large inventory because I am going to give this beautiful gift to all my friends.
A message to Andrea Burns, thank you for enriching our lives with your talent and heart.
