This is an aluminum, silver enclosure for an IDE hard drive to USB 2.0. The strong, streamlined constructions provides excellent hard drive protection and heat dissipation with the large blue 8cm fan. The compact design provides space-saving on your computer desk. Share your photos, videos and other data with your friends by simply plugging it into their computer. USB 2.0 provides hot swapping and plug and play functions, high-speed data transfers and compatibility with almost any system (MAC or Windows). The enclosure is also lightweight for easy portability and has no limitation to hard drive size/capacity.

Summary: Great enclosure!
Comment: This is a great unit. I have gone through a few other crappy enclosures and I wanted something that was actively cooled (with a big fan) and not falling apart when I pulled it out of the box. This one fulfilled all my expectations (which are pretty high, even for a $40 unit). Plus, it has a neat blue fan which is way l33t.

What I also liked is that the unit has no designated top or bottom - it's just a rectangle box. This means that most any side can be down (except for the fan side). The reason that this is important is that it means I can position the drive in such a way that the power switch is at the top of the backing plate, not at the bottom which becomes nearly inaccessible when you have a few drives next to each other.

I will definitely be purchasing another one... because of the nifty blue fan, of course ;)

Summary: Don't buy
Comment: When I received this noname enclosure, I could not remove one of the screws because it was way too tight. I spent over a half hour trying to get it out with 9 different screwdrivers. I gave up and contacted Luxor. I sent it back. Then I got an email saying that they had no trouble removing the screw and since there was a scratch on the case, the enclosure wasn't new anymore so they sent it back to me.

I got it back and I have spent the entire morning trying to make it functional. I am no novice at enclosures. I have a number of them. Never had any problem with them.

This enclosure was manufactured by a dyslexic chinese person. The ribbon could not be used on the same side (edge) as it was connected to the enclosure because the ribbon was on the opposite side of where the connection was on the hard drive. The drive could not be inserted as shown by the directions on the box. (So that's not clear, but believe me, it was on the wrong side.) Therefore, the power connection was on the opposite side of the enclosure from where IT HAD TO BE USED. The hard drive barely fit and I had to repeatedly assemble and unassemble and screw and unscrew until I could get the hard drive, ribbon and power coupling together so it would fit into the case. Nevertheless, I could not fully screw on the back of the enclosure because the power and ribbon coupling were in the way.

Now the power is on to the enclosure, but neither of my computers can recognize the enclosure.

Stay far, far away from this thing. It just bad news. A waste of money and time when there are so many enclosures out there that are a snap to use.

Summary: Nice asthetics, nice functionality.
Comment: Pros: For a external drive enclosure this thing is sure cool to look at. The LEDs light up the front and the fan brilliantly. The USB connection gets the job done too.

Neutrals: Moderately difficult to get your drive inside the thing, but things like this are usually a pain to do.

Cons: The LEDs can be too bright, more just at night really. Still cool though. No firewire, though the USB is fine for me.

Summary: From Metal Gear to Silver Cool
Comment: After having my Metal Gear Substance 3.5" external HDD enclosure go up in smoke after only a year of use, I thought for sure my HDD had went up in smoke with it. As it turns out, the flashing blue highlights on the Metal Gear enclosure only meant that the enclosure had fried. Needing a new enclosure for my drive, I decided to go with the Mapower enclosure, as it had the same ice-blue highlights as the Metal Gear enclosure, plus I liked the unique highlighted fan. While this enclosure was a bit more expensive, the benefits of this enclosure seemed to justify the price.

Having received the enclosure, I'm happy to say that it is everything I thought it would be and more. Looking at the picture on Amazon, the enclosure seemed a bit big, but as it turns out it is rather small and takes up less surface space than my old Metal Gear enclosure. I'm also happy to report that the fan is not only cool, but rather quiet. Don't get me wrong, you can hear it and will notice it, but it's not so loud that it sounds like a jet engine is sitting on your desk. I'd say its no louder than the fan on a laptop. When the drive churns, it can be a bit loud as well, although the inconspicuous(it took me a bit to figure out what they were and why they were there) adhesive feet that come with the drive help to control the sound, especially if you have the enclosure sitting on a solid surface such as a desk.
