Customer Rating: Summary: Not well built Comment: Bought this item a few months ago and forgot about it. I needed something to cut pipe in tight spots. It arrived and I watched the video. Tried it out and it seemed to do an alright job. Took it out to the job sight and during the first cut it broke apart. Tried to reassemble , but I believe the screw holes are stripped out. For the money it definately wasn't worth it for me. Too late for a refund so I'm out some $.
Hope everyone else has better luck than me.
Customer Rating: Summary: Ultra Cut does the job Comment: I am not a plumber. I make custom cooling manifolds out of 1/2 and 3/4 copper tubing. I have had projects that require hundreds of precision cuts. So far, this tool saves time and was economical in price. The product looks like it is well made and may last quite a while, but it is too soon to say for sure.
The instructions for changing the tool from 1/2 to 3/4 were not clear enough for me. I finally figured our I had to push the rollers down into the 3/4 position.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bad purchase Comment: The battery does not hold except for two cuts or so. Not worth the money.
I would not recommend to anyone.
Customer Rating: Summary: Terrific innovation in pipe cutting! Comment: Despite the previous negative reviewer post, I decided to chance making a purchase anyway. I'm VERY glad that I did. It works just like the video demos. Once you read the operating instructions (1 minute), and learn to use it, it works GREAT! Clean cuts in seconds. AMAZING! I've cut my share of copper pipe by hand, and I wish I had this tool 20 years ago when I was repiping an apartment complex.
If you don't read the instruction manual, and just stick a piece of pipe it it and press the button, there will be a racket because the pipe is not engaging the cutter wheel properly. That is not the tool's fault. That is called OPERATOR ERROR. Adjust the lever for 1/2 or 3/4 pipe, secure the pipe in the spring loaded rollers, press the button, and in seconds one pipe is now two.
The metal is light weight, which makes the tool easy to hold overhead without fatigue. When removing the screws (to change cutter wheels) you can't crank it down on them like it is made of stainless steel or something. Get it snug (normal torque, not gorilla style) and it will be fine. I replace the cutter wheel with absolutely not problems. However, you will need to remember the proper direction things go during reassembly. (I reversed the rollers, which was quickly resolved.) So keep the manual handy, or take good mental pictures.
It can easily cut pipe in wall cavities, which has always been a tough job. The fact that it is made in the USA, makes me feel that much better about the purchase.
My friends can't believe how fast the UltraCut works when I give them a demo. "NO WAY!" If you are cutting pipe, GET THIS TOOL!
Customer Rating: Summary: Neat concept, but poor build quality will soon irk you... Comment: IMHO, the UltraCut reeks of a cheap Chinese toy...
I bought one of these, charged the battery and fired it up. It makes a racket which immediately alerts you that the rotating cutter assembly has a cheap Harbor Freight feel too it. Looking carefully you discover the racket is due to components with wide tolerances. After getting a pipe stuck in it, which won't take you very long to do, I had to half disassemble it and quickly realized the unit isn't designed for maintenance. Many of the cast parts are simple white metal without any threaded inserts that will strip very easily.
$100+ is tough to justify for something that is unlikely to last very long. Realizing this was a bad investment, I carefully repackaged it and brought it back. It's a shame Superior spent far more marketing this with neat web videos than actually engineering a modicum of quality into it...
