Editorial Reviews:

You'll always be prepared with the ICF-B05W emergency radio. With its weather resistant design, built-in power generator, Weather/AM/FM radio, flashlight and bright yellow color, you can rely on it in any emergency situation. Because it's never too early to prepare for a crisis, the ICF-B05W radio ensures you'll never be caught without important emergency tools. Resistant tuning allows a station to be tuned before its put away for emergency use. The radio is battery powered, but if an emergency strikes, one minute of cranking the built-in power generator provides up to 1 hour of AM radio, 40 minutes of FM radio or 15 minutes of light. The radio operates on 2x C batteries and contains an LED light, which comes in handy at night. Weather/AM/FM Radio with Resistant Tuning allows the station to be tuned before it's put away for emergency use and will stay in that position until it's changed. Tuning control for the weather band is located in the battery compartment. Two Light Settings allow you to choose between using a flashlight or a soft light, which adds to the functionality of the radio. In the flashlight setting, the LED provides a bright light that can be used to illuminate an object or help guide the user when walking. The soft light is a low level light that adds illumination or comfort light when a group is gathered around it. Charging Indicator when the Power Generator handle is turned at the optimum rotating speed (in either direction), the green LED Charging Indicator will illuminate. Weight - 1.3 pounds 21.3 ounces

Summary: Decent but not perfect
Comment: I was impressed with the emergency lighting and radio capabilities by simply cranking the generator handle. There's a small rechargeable battery inside that takes the charge from cranking the handle to give you several minutes of light and radio reception. Installing a pair of alkaline C batteries makes the radio and lighting much easier to use (no cranking necessary) but it's nice to have the generator crank in case the C batteries go dead.

The light at the very top is a single white LED with shiny reflector. It's not super bright but sufficient while you find your real flashlight. The other light provides diffused soft lighting and helps to illuminate the radio dial to aide in tuning.

AM and FM reception are pretty good and easy to tune with the external tuning knob. However, the weather radio section was a bit disappointing to me for a couple reasons.

Unlike many crystal controlled or synthesized weather radios that have 7 discrete frequency selections via a selector switch to choose the weather radio channel, the Sony has a small analog tuning knob inside the battery compartment. You have to carefully tune and center the station in order to get decent reception. If you move out of your local area and need to find another weather radio channel, you have to open the battery compartment and retune. Pretty lame!

Otherwise a decent radio with very nice build quality and feel.
