Upgrading to a new computer has never been easier. The Belkin Easy Transfer Cable offers a quick way to transfer your files and settings from your old computer to a new one. Just install the software provided on the enclosed CD onto your XP computer. Then, connect each end of the cable to the USB ports on both computers. The Windows Easy Transfer wizard automatically appears and lets you select items to copy. With just a couple of clicks, you can transfer your photos, music, settings, and more.

Customer Rating: Summary: Works pretty good - some issues - some hints Comment: This is a combination of Belkins cable and Microsoft's Easy Transfer program.
The cable is great.
Microsoft's Easy Transfer worked pretty good. It did a very good job of transferring documents and settings from my XP laptop to my new vista laptop. Only a couple of problems:
-The Norton firewall programs running on the to PCs prevented the transfer from working. Easy enough fix, temporarily turned off the firewall software.
-The Easy Transfer software stopped working on the Vista PC because of the buffer overflow error on the new laptops' touch-pad driver. Weird, but again an easy enough fix, ended the touch pad program and used the mouse instead. Closed other unnecessary programs to be on the safe side.
Once the transfer was complete, I checked everything out and found a couple of things:
-about 95% of the transfer was perfect
-slight problem with Outlook, My Outlook configuration is very complex, multiple profiles each with multiple email account and most of those have multiple data files associated. One Outlook data file didn't transfer because it was in a weird location on the old PC. Which leads to...
-Files not under documents and settings don't transfer such as
---one of my outlook data files at the root of the C drive
---Quickbooks data files that were in the Programs folder
-One of the printers settings didn't transfer right, again an easy fix
In summary:
The cable and software do a good job, just remember:
-close unnecessary programs, specially the firewalls
-files in not in documents and settings need to be done manually. If I took the time to choose those additional files rather than just use the default in the Easy Transfer software, they probably would have transfered just fine.
-I installed the programs (office, quickbooks, etc.) on the new vista PC prior to the transfer. I was concearned about trying to transfer programs from on PC to another. I liked the idea just tranfering documents and settings.
-The cable come with other programs that allow you link any PCs to manually transfer files.
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy transfer Comment: The product works as advertised. I had to restart twice, but the third time, everything went well. A great way to transfer needed files, as well as browser pref's and favorites.
Customer Rating: Summary: A one-way street Comment: Only works when you want to copy files from an older PC to a Vista PC. It even asks you if you want to transfer from the newer PC but it doesn't work!
Customer Rating: Summary: Hopeless... Comment: First Off, the system is picky about which computer is running the system and which is not when you set it up. It will spend minutes sending you back and forth between a tutorial 'I have the cable, how do I use it?' without getting to a menu cue that takes you to the next stage of file selection. It is almost better if you do it off a fresh boot.
Second, many downloaded files and programs off the Internet _do not_ transfer or even show up as transferrable. .pdf files. Free and Shareware games. Nothing with a copyright or transfer protection. Which is ludicrous on it's face (do it all over again) if not for the fact that many of my programs are so old that they are hard if not impossible to find anymore. This is particularly irritating for games where you have already paid a licensing fee.
Third, the system has a nasty tendency to crash, for no apparent reason. Looking over tech forum sites it appears that not all USB ports are created equal and the current density or parity values can cause the connection to break. What is infuriating is that this can vary anywhere from 2-4% for the front USB ports to 10-20% for the rear ports (and I have tried every possible combination inbetween) before a little flashing USB plug with a red X comes up to let you know that here and no farther shall you go. Of course, if you have left the machine on overnight and the little green light on the 'Belkin' cable system is still blinking when you see that the graph is stopped at less than 20%, you are apt to be of a very unpleasant disposition, given you left it at 15.
Utterly unfair and ridiculous given that 43 dollars for the cable plus whatever investment you have made in a brand new Vista machine have left you with no ability to move data, pictures, web pages or _legitimately download-owned software_ from machine to machine. It is almost a deliberate denial of useful user history in pursuit of excessively complex transfer systems and copyright protections: $$$$.
Why pay for multigig and terabyte drives if you cannot transfer entire user **entities**, complete with standing licenses, between units?
Customer Rating: Summary: Belkin USB Cable Comment: Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista
I cannot say much as my usb slot in my old computer failed, but whenever it reposnded the cable worked well
there are however other cables(much cheaper) from Belkin to aid in transferring files from old XP computer to new Vista or xp or other compatable OS
