Editorial Reviews:

The Nickelodeon series "Spongebob Squarepants"--a sharp, funny cartoon that attracts more viewers than any other program on the channel and has spawned a $2 billion-a-year franchise--reaches the big screen with The Sponge Boy SquarePants Movie. Its album features music written for the animation plus live action film and perfrormed by a Modern Rock roster appealing to the show's college audience, including The Flaming Lips, Wilco, The Shins and The Dust Brothers' Mike Simpson. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Music From the Movie and More-slated to be in a bright yellow jewel case-is destined to be that rare soundtrack that is both a favorite of kids and a college cult classic.

Summary: A little over-the-top? You bet!
Comment: Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? If you have a young one in your home (or one who is young-at-heart!) then you know the answer to that question! And if you saw the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, then you have heard this music. Some of it comes from within the movie - the pirates singing the Spongebob theme, or Spongebob and Patrick singing Now That We're Men, and Goofy Goober Rock from the movie's climax - but the rest you will recognize from the closing credits. But, while you only heard pieces of them from the movie, you can now listen to all of them.

Overall, I found this to be a wonderful CD. Among my favorites are Bikini Bottom, The Jellyfish Song, and The Goofy Goober Song, but I must admit that I loved them all. Are these songs a little over-the-top? You bet! My four-year-old loves them, and I am delighted at the way we can both enjoy this CD. What a hoot!

Summary: Decent I suppose.
Comment: I can say one thing you will probably get exactly what you are expecting when you order this. The whole album is pretty perdictable, but it has some funny and decent songs. Most Spongebob fans will enjoy it.

Summary: Great for Spongebob fans
Comment: My son, age 5, loves the rockin' version of the Goofy Goober song, which is the same as in the movie. If your child likes the movie, the soundtrack is great to have. It's a lot of fun.

Summary: I'M A GOOFY GOOBER...RAWK!
Comment: If there's any one movie I can tell you with honesty that I've seen over 100 times, it's easily The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Originally, I had only seen it maybe 5 times, but when I used to work in a movie store, my buddy an' me would constantly have the movie playing, setting it to repeat until we closed the store. That was every single day we worked together. The movie never got old, but even better was that we memorized the incredible soundtrack. The likes of The Lion King have NOTHING on the soundtrack for the SpongeBob movie. Don't you dare say that this is a soundtrack for "kids" either (especially if you know how much of a bad word that is in the movie), because the biggest shocker on the soundtrack was easily Motorhead. Yes, Motorhead, one of the all-time best straight up rock/metal bands of all time is here, performing a song exclusively for the movie. One thing a few people have mentioned is that their kids are either too old or too young for the soundtrack on its own. True, it works best with the movie...and the track list just plain won't make sense to anyone unless they've seen it since it's so spread out, but I wouldn't really buy this for my daughter if she were old enough. If you want a more SpongeBob-y sound, go for the other soundtracks based on the show. This one though, is for fans of the movie first, everyone else second.

I don't want to go and review every single song, since that's silly, so I'll just cover those that I love or were surprised by. As much as I'm against the whiney angst sound of Avril Lavigne, I'll say that I could tolerate her rendition of the SpongeBob theme. It's more modernized, for lack of better word, but works for the soundtrack. The Goofy Goober Theme Song is one of the stupidest things you'll ever hear, but the instant it's over, you'll have it stuck in your head for days on end. Aw man, even just now after typing that, it's stuck in my head, no joke. The Best Day Ever is a SpongeBob staple if there ever was one, and it's so charmingly sweet that you can't help but love it. I never thought I'd say that SpongeBob has a nice singing voice, but it's true in this case. Ocean Man by Ween is the main track everyone mentions, and for good reason. I don't know why, but I couldn't stand Ween for the longest time. But in hearing Ocean Man, I was blown away. No matter how little rhythm you have, you'll be dancing along to this lil' number. Surf music does in fact, live on. Now That We're Men is the kind of song you wish you could think up. Unfortunately, this is REALLY one that you need to see the movie to get all the way. Goofy Goober Rock is incredible, but there's one very glaring problem. In the movie, there's a little scat bit about halfway through the song, but it's completely missing this time around. What's odd is that it was missing in the game as well, so it must've been a one-shot deal with whoever sang that part. So there's a small bit of silence that they loop over here, but I still miss that part. You Better Swim was stunning when used in the motorcycle bar portion of the movie, and hearing it in full for the first time makes you remember why you love Motorhead. Or, if you've never heard them before this point, opens up many doors to their world of rock. Finally, the show's theme sung by pirates is a masterpiece. It sounds orchestrated, with "real" vocals and flat out rules. You'll be in an epic mood after hearing this sucker.

All of the other tracks are great too, of course, but those are easily the stand outs in my book. And after seeing the movie as many times as I have, those I mentioned will be the ones that will be burned into your memory forever. And you gotta love the album's artwork, which is something that net a few customers I'm sure. There are few albums that put me in a good mood after hearing them, but this is one of those albums. As if the movie weren't inspirational enough, the soundtrack ups its status more so. Now if you're done, I'm off to go sing some Ocean Man for a few hours. Seriously.
