Summary: Wireless Motorola Cable Modem
Comment: Motorola SURFboard® Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (SBG900)

I love this item! Setup was hassle free. I will caution those who are not tech savvy to call your cable provider customer support and give them the MAC Address of the device before installing it.. this is especially necessary if you have a phone service like Vonage. Comcast has a special customer support phone option to setup a store bought device.

There was a small glitch with the Vonage service if you turn on the modem firewall. This was easily fixed by making a special entry in the DHCP Leases page in the modem setup (do this BEFORE!! you turn on the modem firewall)... just add the ID address of the voice terminal (usually a copy and paste) then tell it to BYPASS THE FIREWALL. I have contacted both Motorola and Vonage about this workaround and both companies now have it for tech support. They can tell you how to make the change if you have Vonage as a phone service.

Although, if you have a decent software firewall.. you don't need to activate the modem firewall.

I do suggest that you use the WPA Shared wireless access feature. its just a matter of choosing the option setting and password.

The other item... Choose a name for your wireless network, then turn off the name broadcast feature. This will prevent strangers from stealing your wireless access.

The two items in question were not a challenge for me, because I am familiar with this kind of hardware. Which is why I provided the basic information here.

Summary: Great Product
Comment: I bought a Linksys WCG200 combo cable modem/router from BestBuy a year ago, stupidly ignoring the warnings about random disconnects. Well, all those negative reviews were right -- the thing disconnected an average of a dozen times a day, most often during long uploads and streaming-video downloads. In desperation, I purchased the Motorola SBG900 from Amazon (for a lot less money than the Linksys) and couldn't be happier.

I connected the SBG900, called in the MAC ID number to my Internet provider (Charter), and was using the new unit within 3 minutes. It has performed flawlessly since then, and I would unreservedly recommend this product to anyone who's had random-disconnect problems with other-brand routers.

Summary: Convenient all-in-one, but the DHCP server gets confused
Comment: I have a pretty diverse network, so I needed something that was not going to insist I toe the Windows line. This unit was easy to set up at first, and the speed was very good. I did have to wire my two Airport Express units because the alphabet soup of security options didn't jive. The trouble started when a PC or laptop would be awakened. It would occasionally get a complaint from the DHCP server that the requested IP was already taken. Then it would be stuck, not able to get an IP at all. This didn't make sense because I was using dynamic addressing for all devices. When I switched to static addressing, the problem seemed to go away. But I could not assign static addressing to the WinXP computer. I tried several times, and each time it looked like it switched to static, but later it would revert back to dynamic. I also could not use static addressing on the Airport Express units because they would not activate reliably. As others have said, you have to use the DHCP server whether you like it or not. I have not found any other highly rated all-in-one, so I may go back to modem+router, all Linksys.

Summary: Perfect so far!!
Comment: I am using the modem and wireless router with a PS3, laptop and printer. I have had no problems so far. I'm saving money by not having to rent the cable company's modem and I get the wireless router to boot. I can gain access to the network from anywhere in the house and my PS3 has no lag time. Overall, I am glad that I purchased this item.
