Summary: Great info for those who hunger for more!
Comment: I have become a great fan of Ubuntu Debian Linux. Being an ex-Windows junkie and even a MS-DOS old-timer, I have new hope in what the Ubuntu community is trying to accomplish. This is a great book to have around if you need to do any amount of server or shell administration and includes a great deal for GUIs as well. It's not really a reference book by definition, however it stays by my side every time I work on my Linux server. My hat is off to Chris and Francois for making this a great tool!

Summary: Over a Newbies head
Comment: I like this book, but I think it's too much for a Linux Newbie to understand. If you plan on really getting into Linux and learing the ins and outs, then this book is for you. If your looking for a way to migrate away from windows and moving on to Linux, buy another book. There are plenty of good books out there dedicated to new users of Linux...this book isn't one of them

Summary: Ubuntu Linux Toolbox -- A short review

Summary: Ubuntu Toolbox Not for Everyone
Comment: Ubuntu Linux Toolbox is not for everyone. Linux is an operating system that transcends the operating system by including more than just an operating system. Linux is not for one who wants instant results. It has a very very steep learning curve.

With that written: This book has a lot of useful Debian commands that can be run in a Terminal. However, if one does not have a some experience with Debian, Linux and the terminal. The commands in this book probably will not help very much.

The major problem I had with this book is that it discussed network configuration, but does not speak to me about how to connect static DSL connections.

Drivers and permissions in the various versions of Linux can be quite a pain, and information can be difficult to obtain from the web. After all, if I cannot get into my own files, the system has kept me out of my own computer very well.

A word on Linux installation: Most, if not all, Linux systems are installed in two stages. First the base is set up and then the rest of the system files are installed. If one tries to install Ubuntu and does not click the Install icon on the desktop to install after the first stage is complete, the operating system will not be installed on their hard drive, it simply will not boot after being shutdown.
