My grandmother, known as "Gram" in our family, has always eaten the plain simple food of Northern Michigan, walked either at work or to and from work all of her life, and continued working into her 80's. Gram's words of encouragement to my mother went like this, "Don't quit work too early. I regret doing so." My grandmother will soon celebrate her 92nd birthday!!

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon at Emory University Hospital, columnist for TIME magazine, and Chief Medical Correspondent at CNN, has published Chasing Life. Traveling to such far away places as Russia and Okinawa, Japan in search of longevity theories, he found no "magic elixir," he says. But, he does give us reasons to read on and increase our active lifespans.

In 1983 I spent a summer in Hamamatsu, Japan, teaching English. In the land of rice, seaweed, and seafood I saw perhaps 1 obese person. Now, Dr. Gupta tells us, the Western influences of our fast food diet are making inroads to even such far away places as Okinawa.

The Okinawans are some of the longest lived people on earth. Most natives live to 100 years old. Heart disease, cancer, and stroke rate very low. Women do not even need mammograms. They live simply, working physically challenging jobs as farmers and fishermen into their 90s. The diet of fish, soup, soy, vegetables, and brown rice has remained the same since the 1600's. Dr. Gupta outlines what he's learned: finish eating before you're full, restrict calories, eat a bigger breakfast, get more vitamins and fiber by eating fruits and vegetables, remain physically active, and socialize.

Another chapter covers "Taming the Beast" or Dealing With Cancer. Today one out of three Americans runs the risk of developing cancer within his or her lifetime. How can we prevent this dreaded disease? Dr. Gupta recommends 9 Controllable Cancer Risks.

Summary: Make your body healthy, Yes U Can !
Comment: I am a regular person who doesn't know all the ins and outs of medical health. This book "Chasing Life" opened up many topics that i was unaware of but wanted to know. I am 48 and still think of my self as being young. But reality is that our physical body is not. Therefore, i believe a book like this is most timely. Most important for me is Mr. Gupta mentioning the different studies behind the supplements or sciences, thus providing proof about them. Now i have more confidence in the reputation of each and can research further on my own. Which i did and now developed my own health regimen each day, be it doing exercise or taking multivitamins. I also recommend the 7 Pillars of Health by Colbert, that too is an excellent book. I wrote this review to save others time, our most precious commodity, and help in extending life as Mr. Gcupta aims to do for all of us who read his book.

Comment: In reading this book I did not learn anything other than what one finds usually in newspaper articles covering general health subjects. I felt the title of the book promised much more than the actual contents delivered.
