Editorial Reviews:

A Medal of Honor recipient looks back at his own service—and ahead to America’s future.

Jack Jacobs was acting as an advisor to the South Vietnamese when he and his men came under devastating attack. Severely wounded, 1st Lt. Jacobs took command and withdrew the unit, returning again and again to the site of the attack to rescue more men, saving the lives of a U.S. advisor and thirteen Allied soldiers. Col. Jacobs received the nation’s highest military award, the Medal of Honor.

Here, with candor, humor, and quiet modesty, Col. Jack Jacobs tells his stirring story of heroism, honor, and the personal code by which he has lived his life, and expounds with blunt honesty and insight his views on our contemporary world, and the nature and necessity of sacrifice.

If Not Now, When? is a compelling account of a unique life at both war and peace, and the all-too-often unexamined role of the citizenry in the service and defense of the Republic.

Summary: A Humble Hero
Comment: JACK JACOBS stands tall as a humble hero. Jack's actions are truly heroic and told with humility, humor and matter-of-fact style that captures the reader. Along with Jack Jacobs, it is my privilege to be a member of our Medal of Honor Society - today, Jan 4,2009 - having ninety nine living members. Within our MOH Society, Jack is a hero's hero.

Comment: Excellent book. Well written. His insights are right-on and often ironically humorous. Those who lived those times will appreciate his viewpoints -- for those who didn't, read and learn.

Summary: excellent book
Comment: while this book is ostensibly a biography of jack jacobs, a person that i greatly admire, it is also a book about the tragedy of war, the stupid way that it has been prosecuted by our leaders and a book of philosophy about life in general. it is well worth reading. the book actually surprised me with its depth.

Summary: If not now, when by Col. (MOH) Jack Jacobs
Comment: A great book telling it like it was and still is today. I was in the USN during this same time as a Navy Pilot on the USS Ranger. I met the Col. at a MOH book signing and watch him on IMUS in the morning. I hope he writes another book. john manstrom, ga.
